What was supposed to be a fun weekend on Whidbey Island turned into a crummy weekend followed by a crummier week. On Saturday I developed a high fever so my friends Matthew and Danny helped me get back to the city so I could go to the hospital. My fever had gone down a bit I called and they said I could stay home but to come in if my fever went up again. Of course it did, so we spent Sunday in the ER so I could get fluids and they could try to figure out what was going on.
They knew it was some kind of infection, so they sent me home with antibiotics. But I continued to have high fevers and get really sick. On Tuesday I went to see my plastic surgeon to have him check my nipple reconstruction. He took a look at the port site on my chest and said it looked bad and the port needed to come out immediately. It turns out that the incision had opened up and the port was exposed. After a lot of back-and-forth, I went back to the UW ER and was admitted later that night. The blood infection needed to be treated with IV antibiotics and the port needed to be removed.
So I’ve been in the hospital since then. They let me go home today, hooray! I have a PICC line in my arm and have to do IV antibiotics at home for another two weeks. I don’t know if they’ll resume chemo next week or not.
On top of it all, my hair started falling out today so I shaved it all off. Not my best look, but it is what it is. I’m exhausted and so glad to be back in my own bed.
